Happy Fruitcake Toss Day!

fruitcake tossEvery year, since 1996, the city of Manitou Springs, Colorado, has hosted their annual Great Fruitcake Toss on the first Saturday of January. Alas, the event has been cancelled for this year. According to the event Facebook page, “The change in venue, lack of sponsors, and the unpredictability of the weather have decreased attendance. Additionally, responding to natural disasters with a reduced budget and staff over the past two years has made it necessary for Manitou to prioritize their events…” Sadly for us, the Great Fruitcake Toss didn’t make the cut.

Not all is lost, though. You still have time to buy a plane ticket to Atlantic City so you can fling your fruitcake on the beach to win fabulous prizes. The Landshark Bar and Grill is hosting the event to benefit Gilda’s Club of South Jersey, a non-profit support community for people living with cancer, their families and friends.

If catching the red eye isn’t your idea of a good time, there are better ways to get rid of your unwanted fruitcakes. We’ve partnered with Glad this year for their #SAVEITSUNDAY program. With #SAVEITSUNDAY, Glad hopes to educate the public about the consequences of food waste. Send us your unwanted fruitcake, and we’ll make sure it gets a good home.
