Just had to share some emails we received from our friend, Iron Dreamer:

I’m reminded of the saying, “Nutty as a fruitcake.” Don’t know why that just came to mind

I like the fruitcake dart board! The fruitcake kitchen-utensil caddy is a nice touch, too, as is the knife rack. In fact, you’ve inspired me to take one of our fruitcakes out of the shoe closet and make my own knife rack.

Fruitcake – The other white wood!

Well, I was just going to stick the kitchen knives in the fruitcake, but they wouldn’t go in very far. So I took the fruitcake out to my drill press in the garage, and drilled out knife slots with a 1/4-inch drill. I realized, too late, that the ragged edges of the slots were too tough for me to file down easily. I decided to discard the fruitcake, and now it is propping open the gate to the front yard. I need to think about this project some more.

Good news. I got another fruitcake out of the shoe closet, and took it out to the garage. I secured it to my milling machine, and used a 3/8 inch end mill to carve knife slots in it. This was a fairly quick process, taking only about three hours. I used plenty of Relion (metal-cutting lubricant) to keep the cutting edges cool and prevent binding.

I was quite surprised, when, moved by an obscure and self-destructive impulse, I tasted the fruitcake shavings and discovered that the lubricant had improved the flavor dramatically over the original.

Now I’m going to surprise my wife with her new knife block! She’ll be thrilled.

Bad news. My wife was not thrilled. She objected to the taste the metal-cutting lubricant imparted to the knives. I thought I had wiped the slots in the fruitcake clean, but apparently not. I guess it’s back to the drawing board.

Good news! Inspiration struck, and I ran the fruitcake through the dishwasher. It is now clean and shiny, and we have a most elegant knife block in our kitchen.

Next project: Milling out two fruitcakes to make rocket nozzles. Stay tuned!
